Pain Management & Chronic Conditions

with Hypnotherapy

“There is no pain until it reaches the brain.”   –   Ron Eslinger

At Lucid Mind Hypnotherapy, I help clients reduce and manage chronic pain using the natural, transformative power of the mind. If you’re living with long-term discomfort, there is hope. Hypnosis for pain management is a gentle and effective approach to reclaiming your quality of life.

How Hypnosis Helps with Pain and Chronic Conditions

Pain is not just a physical experience: it is processed, interpreted, and magnified by the brain.

This is why pain management hypnotherapy can work well: it helps calm the nervous system, reframe how pain is perceived, and address the emotional triggers that may be contributing to chronic symptoms.

Theories that Explain Pain and the Mind-Body Connection

Understanding how pain works in the mind and body helps explain why chronic conditions can respond well to hypnosis.

Pain Gate Theory

This widely accepted neurological theory explains how pain signals are processed in the body.

According to the theory, pain must pass through a “gate” in the spinal cord before it can reach the brain.
If other stronger sensory input, such as touch, pressure, or warmth, is activated at the same time, it can effectively “close the gate” to those pain signals, preventing them from reaching the brain. This is because the non-painful signals reach the brain first.

Through hypnosis, we harness this principle by guiding the mind to focus on alternative sensations or imagery, such as warmth, safety, or deep calm. This mental redirection creates competing signals that override the pain message. It’s one of the reasons why hypnotherapy is so effective for pain relief: it teaches the brain to shift attention and re-prioritise the inputs.

Dr John Sarno’s Psychosomatic Theory – The Divided Mind

According to Dr Sarno, in up to 70–80% of chronic pain cases the true cause is emotional rather than physical. He suggested that the subconscious mind often suppresses painful or traumatic emotions, particularly those formed in early childhood, as a way of protecting the individual. When these repressed emotions begin to rise to the surface later in life, the mind creates physical pain as a distraction. This redirection helps to keep emotional distress buried in the unconscious, where it feels safer.

From this perspective, chronic pain is not just a symptom but a signal. The subconscious mind attempts to move attention away from emotional material which it considers threatening.

Hypnotherapy can help access these hidden emotions, relieving the need for the body to express them through physical discomfort.

Through hypnosis for pain management, we gently explore and process these underlying emotions, reducing the need for the body to express them physically.

FAQs

While hypnosis doesn’t ‘cure’ the underlying physical condition, it helps to change how pain is experienced in the brain. Hypnotherapy has been shown in clinical studies and brain scans to reduce the intensity and frequency of pain. It also improves sleep, lowers stress, and supports emotional resilience, all of which are essential for managing chronic conditions.

As with any therapy, individual results can vary and outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

Hypnosis for pain has shown benefits for a wide range of chronic conditions, including fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines, arthritis, back pain, and tension headaches. It can also support recovery from injury or surgery by calming the nervous system and improving emotional wellbeing.

No, you will remain awake, aware, and in control the entire time. Hypnosis is simply a deeply relaxed and focused state, similar to meditation or daydreaming. In this state, your mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions and behavioural change.

Every person and condition is different. Some clients notice improvement within 3 session, while others benefit from a longer series of sessions. During your free consultation, we’ll explore your needs and create a personalised plan that suits you.
