Is Lucid Dreaming Safe for Everyone? 3 Types of People Who Should Not Try It.Yet.

Lucid dreaming is one of the most extraordinary experiences a human mind can have. But is lucid dreaming safe for everyone?

Most people have heard of lucid dreaming, but far fewer understand what it actually involves. In its simplest form, lucid dreaming means becoming aware that you are dreaming while the dream is still happening. Rather than being carried passively through the night’s narrative, you wake up inside it, fully conscious, present, and in many cases able to influence what unfolds around you.

This is not a fringe concept. Lucid dreaming has been scientifically verified since the 1970s, when researcher Keith Hearne first recorded real-time eye signals from a sleeping lucid dreamer. Since then, it has been studied extensively as a tool for reducing chronic nightmares, supporting creative problem-solving, processing difficult emotions, and deepening self-awareness. Athletes use it for mental rehearsal. Therapists explore it as an adjunct to trauma work. Artists and writers use it as a creative space unlike any other.

Most people dream every night without ever realising it. Lucid dreaming simply means becoming aware that you are dreaming, and with practice, learning to explore and even shape that inner world consciously. Far from being strange or dangerous, it is a natural capacity of the human mind, one that researchers have studied for decades and that many people use to reduce nightmares, boost creativity and deepen self-awareness.

For the vast majority of people, lucid dreaming is completely safe, deeply fascinating, and genuinely transformative when approached with the right guidance.

However, because lucid dreaming involves deliberately working within the subconscious mind, blurring the boundary between waking awareness and the dream state, it is not the right starting point for everyone. For a small number of conditions, this level of inner work may need to wait, or be approached differently.

Here are two types of people for whom lucid dreaming may not be the right choice right now.

lucid dreaming risks

1. People with psychosis or conditions that affect the perception of reality

Lucid dreaming works entirely within the inner world. The practice asks you to become deeply immersed in mental imagery, sensation and subconscious experience, while simultaneously maintaining a thread of waking awareness. This dual awareness is what makes it so powerful.

But it also requires one crucial ability: the capacity to clearly distinguish between inner experience and outer reality. For people living with psychosis, schizophrenia, or other conditions where that boundary is already fragile or distorted, lucid dreaming carries a real risk of deepening that confusion rather than supporting healing. Working intensively within a dream state can be counterproductive and potentially distressing for this group of people.

Psychiatric care, talking therapies and approaches that work with the conscious mind tend to be far more appropriate and supportive here.

2. People with severe personality disorders

Guided lucid dreaming, particularly when facilitated through hypnosis, relies on a stable therapeutic relationship, clear boundaries, and the client’s ability to engage with deep inner work in a grounded way. For some people with severe personality disorders, particularly where emotional regulation and reality-testing are already significantly affected, this depth of subconscious exploration can be too intense without prior psychological support in place.

This is not about closing a door permanently. It is about finding the right therapeutic foundation first, so that when the time comes to explore the dream world, it becomes a place of healing rather than overwhelm.

The right step now makes the next step possible.

Signs you are ready to begin

If neither of the above applies to you, there is a very good chance that lucid dreaming is not only safe for you, it may be one of the most rewarding practices you ever explore. You are likely a good candidate if you are curious and open-minded about your inner world, if you already have some awareness of your dream life (even if you only remember fragments), and if you are in a reasonably stable place emotionally. You do not need to be an experienced meditator or have any background in psychology. You simply need a genuine interest in exploring what your sleeping mind has to offer, and a willingness to be guided through the process.

It is also worth knowing that lucid dreaming, like any skill, develops gradually. The first sessions are often about building awareness and learning to recognise the dream state. Patience and consistency matter more than natural talent.

So, is lucid dreaming safe for you?

If you recognise yourself in one of these categories, please know this: there is always a path forward. Healing is never out of reach; it is simply about finding the right tool for where you are right now.

For everyone else, lucid dreaming offers something quite remarkable, a gateway into the subconscious mind that you can learn to navigate with clarity and intention. When combined with hypnosis, it becomes an even more precise and powerful process: one that can help you overcome fears, unlock creativity, process emotions, and reconnect with a deeper sense of self.
